2011 Block of the Month

GENERAL INFO:

I had not planned all throughout 2010 to be the program officer for the guild. What that means is that I do not have a completed 12 BOMs quilt ready to show you. I will be making the BOMs month by month as the year progresses. What I am trying to do is come up with blocks that are fun to make and not necessarily traditional. I will give you the supply list at the meeting preceding the month when a specific BOM will be demonstrated but you will only get a cryptic description of what the block consists of with your supply list. I understand that for some of us this way of doing things might be frustrating if you like to be able to plan ahead and have all your fabric lined up and a specific color scheme all prepared, etc … But bear with me as all is not yet lost.

Here are a few ideas that might help:

• all 12 BOMs will be 12” square finished
• you can keep them all by themselves with their instructions as some kind of a reference
• you can also put them together as a quilt.
• if you would like to make a quilt of the 12 BOMs, then it will end up being a sampler-type quilt.
• adding sashing and borders will allow you to change the final size of the quilt
• you can go 100% scrappy; then it might help if you use one same or similar fabric throughout as “background” to tie the BOMs together; you can also use a consistent fabric in sashing/borders to unify the project
• if you’d rather follow your favorite color scheme, then you should start putting aside a good assortment of your chosen colors: light, medium, dark – small and larger patterns – etc …
• I highly recommend that you obtain a 6 ½” square ruler as several BOMs will be made out of four smaller blocks; I also like the 12 ½” square ruler as all BOMs will be 12 ½” unfinished

If my instructions get you totally frustrated, I plan is to be at Busy Bee the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 1:00 to 3:00; you will then be able to come and vent in person!

I am trying to make 2011 an interesting, at times challenging at least for some of us, but for sure fun year.
